LGBT+ Youth Summer Tech Camps
Maven Youth

Oakland, CA      Education

Maven Youth fosters innovative solutions that empower LGBT+ youth to network, organize and educate for social change. We envision a world where LGBT+ youth are equipped with the knowledge, skill, and ability to create innovative tech solutions — where youth are provided career pathways into technology and supported to advance within the tech industry through training, mentorship and application.

We see a world where LGBT+ youth are free to explore their identity and career free from bullying and hateful speech – a world where the tech industry is changing how the LGBT+ community is represented in games and media, and diverse tech professionals rise within the industry.

Each year we partner with local LGBT+ youth serving organizations and LGBT+ tech professionals to provide free summer tech camps. Maven’s hallmark LGBT+ Youth Summer Tech Camps:

  • Expose LGBT+ youth to career pipelines into the tech sector - from engineers and coders to graphic designers and writers to human resources and talent recruiters.
  • Transform the tech sector through collaborative partnerships that provide tech professionals and companies an opportunity to pay it forward and pave a pathway for a more diverse workforce.
  • Connect local LGBT+ youth serving nonprofits with tech industry resources and volunteers to support the critical services they provide to LGBT+ youth year-round.

Maven camps are free and provide a safe space for LGBT+ youth learn and engage with peers over the summer. Our camps serve 70-100 LGBT+ youth between the ages of 14-19 and have been held in California, Texas, New York and Washington DC. During our camps, LGBT+ youth receive:

  • Training in programming, game creation, digital art and storytelling by tech professionals and youth
  • Mentorship and guidance from LGBT+ tech professionals
  • Social justice and diversity in technology awareness building
  • Tours and exposure to 5-10 tech companies and their staff
  • Team building and networking to build lasting relationships

Why We Like This Project

Maven Youth is such a great way to support and offer LGBT+ youth across the nation a safe place not only to be themselves, but a place where they can learn and engage with their peers about career pathways into the tech industry. For some, this is their light at the end of the tunnel.
