Train Urban Youth to Operate Farmers Markets
Farm Aid HOMEGROWN Youthmarket

Cambridge, MA      Health

Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews host an annual concert to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For 30 years, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, Farm Aid has raised $48 million for programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote good food from family far

HOMEGROWN Youthmarket is a project of Farm Aid, featured as part of our HOMEGROWN Concessions®, good food from family farms. It swings into action everywhere that Farm Aid concerts are held. Youth are paid to staff the market and sell fresh food, fruits and snacks and fresh beverages to concert-goers.

The goals of Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Youthmarket are:

• To expand the voices of youth into HOMEGROWN.org with how to’s and testimonials of their HOMEGROWN Youthmarket experiences
• To provide the farm fresh “farmers market” component of Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Concessions
• To empower youth with skills, employment revenue, and connection to local farmers and the food they grow
• To offer access for fresh, local family farm food in communities that need it most

This RoomFunding project will allow 20 young people to be involved in the HOMEGROWN Youthmarket at Farm Aid.

Why We Like This Project

I really like how Farm Aid incorporates the Youthmarket into the HOMEGROWN Concessions at their annual concert. It's a great opportunity for the youth to see how farmers markets work while prioviding fresh foods for the concert-goers.
